Cliffs appear crumbly and treacherous, Lasalia pensyvanica cf. established in patches. Below cliffs are (nearly?) inaccessible boulderfields with patchy tree cover. Road and creek in bottom provide noise to clifftop. Opposite slopes below cliff have scattered dead hemlock. Back from cliff is rich hickory woodland infested by exotic Bromus. Steep area disked for cultivation in past (old machine at site).;Top of south facing sandstone escarpment above a water gap. Narrow zone along cliff edge is dry and rocky and supports a woodland of stunted Virginia pine with a few scattered table Mountain pine. Dead rootwad has charcoal, but present cohort probably came in after fire.
Representativeness
Narrow community (<12 m wide) on cliff top. Plot width variable to stay in rocky Virginia pine woodland. Community continues up and down clifftop.
